Most of us don't realize how much food we waste and throw away every day. According to the EPA about 94% of the food we throw away ends up in landfills or combustion facilities. Food scraps and yard waste together currently make up about 30% of what we throw away. When food scraps are sent to landfill they break down anaerobically (without oxygen) and produce methane (a greenhouse gas which is approximately 30 times more harmful than carbon dioxide). 

 

The only way to successfully live a low waste lifestyle and reduce your carbon footprint is by composting.  You can stop by the store and drop off your compost for $5.00, any day of the week during our opening hours.

Compost will only be accepted in compostable bags.

• Any type of plastic

• Coal or charcoal ash
  - Might contain substances harmful to plants

• Dairy products (e.g., butter, milk, sour cream, yogurt) and eggs
  - Create odor problems and attract pests such as rodents and flies

• Diseased or insect-ridden plants
  - Diseases or insects might survive and be transferred back to other plants

• Fats, grease, lard, or oils
  - Create odor problems and attract pests such as rodents and flies

• Meat or fish bones and scraps
  - Create odor problems and attract pests such as rodents and flies

• Pet wastes (e.g., dog or cat feces, soiled cat litter)
  - Might contain parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens, and viruses harmful to humans

• Yard trimmings treated with chemical pesticides
  - Might kill beneficial composting organisms
